Owned this 2013 Dodge Journey for just over a year and a half. Vehicle has a drumming noise at 92 kph. You can feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel that roughly approximates the noise. Its quite loud in the cab. This vehicle has exhibited this from when we bought it. 150000 km, 4 cyl. Initially the dealer thought it was wheel bearing. Changed both front, still there. Changed left front again still there. Replaced tires with 4 new ones, still there. Transmission shop thought it was the tranny bearing on the input shaft. Replaced transmission with a used one with lower mileage. Still there. No change in noise loading the front laterally (s bend hard). Shift into neutral no change. Its road speed dependent. Opinions thoughts or questions welcome.

 

you can get an app for your phone to measure vibration frequency. the frequency can be correlated to tire/axle, driveshaft, engine, trans as they all rotate at different speeds.

to clarify; above and below 92, its all ok?
if you speed up to above 92 and coast down lower than 92 the vibration shows up only at 92?
what happens at 92 if you manually change the trans gear...ie same in 6th and 5th?

 

Yes 92 to 94 is the sweet spot. Does not matter what gear or whether the engine is loaded or coasting. There is a slight vibration starting just around 82 kph as well but it fades out in favour of the 92 94. There is no clicking from cv joints etc. Full turn either direction yeilds no noises and no unusual steering movements. Tracks straight at any speed. The drumming goes away by 100 kph. I feel its an axle shaft.

 

 

Yes I am aware of the NVH app. However at 500 its out of my reach.
