Default Door Latch Stuck in Closed Position with Door Open

Hi,

When I went to close my rear passenger door this morning on my 2012 Dodge Journey, the door wouldn’t close. This has happened before in the cold. Usually after letting the engine run for a while, it closes. Today, I noticed that the latch is stuck in the closed position and won’t budge, even with holding the door open and trying to move it to the open position with a screwdriver. . Any ideas on how to fix this?

For now, I’ve left it in my closed garage and have taken an Uber to work.

Thanks!

While you pull on the handle to open the door normally.. pull on the little lever in the latch at the same time

Take a small screwdriver and when you pull the door handle, see if the latch can be popped open. It should snap shut around the round bar on the door jamb. If it doesn't open all the way, when you close it, it may grab the bar early before it gets around it. I'm making it more difficult sounding than it is.

Look at the other door jam to see what’s wrong.
Then I usually just use my fingers and pry that door jam gear up. It happens a lot with the rear hatch of our Magnum.
