Lots of folks have cut the them off, myself included and they sound pretty nice, but you won't get any back pressure release because the suitcase muffler is the culprit here. I eventually when with Zoomers full cat-back stainless system. There is plenty of discussion about the topic, search around and I am sure you will find something that will suit your style.

Beware ofthe Drone is most folks biggest issue. My wife was not having that on long trips....LOL.

I did some more research,a lot of people got rid of the suitcase and replaced it with performance mufflers. They did keep the resonators(another muffler)to keep the drone down like you said, and where very happy still with the sound.I found this link, this answers a lot of questions.http://foohbar.com/a_new_hope.cfm

Exhaust you will be happy with for $50 or less...

Leave the resonators in place. Like Strykker said, it is the 'Suitcase' Muffler you need to get rid of. I cut out the 'Suitcase' Muffler and love it! Check it out. Cheapest and easiest fix. Let me know your input.

So dont put anything in replace of the suitcase, just run pipes back to resonators.I thought a couple of flowmasters would make it sound better.
