shimmy when braking
Recently bought a 2005 Magnum R/T AWD that has just over 17,000 mi. It has suddenly started a fairly moderate shimmy when braking from highway speeds. My first instinct is that it needs new brakes, but with only 17,000+ miles on it, this seems unlikely. Other than this, the car drives smoothly, with no pulling or vibrations that I can notice.
Any suggestions?

it may be warped rotors due to a sudden stop at high speeds, say from 70 down to 40.. it will slightly warp them... also check your tie rods and susp... u never know with these things... good luck!

Mac Gawd,
I have 70,000 + miles on the original Brake Pads. These things are correctly Over Sized for the cars weight. I doubt you need brake pads. Like Mag 4 U said, warping seems to be normal for the stock Rotors when slowing quickly, though usually from 120 to 65 really quick, not 70 to 40... That's just normal for 405 traffic. My warping mellowed out after a few days of normal driving. Everytime they warped I thought I needed brakes, just as you did. I would drive for about a week or so and then check it out more if the problem persists...
I usually downshift to slow ahead of traffic and try to barely use my brakes... Besides, I like the way it sounds when downshifting under a load. Nice growl...

I had that same problem (I think) for about 15 minutes (?!). I was cominga mountain pass where I had to be on the brakes pretty hard. BUT .... after I got back to normal driving the shimmy stopped. My question is ... is it possible for the rotor to "un-warp" itself? And I'm pretty sure it was a warping issue since my previous Ram truck always warped the rotors - and never "un-warped". How come Dodge can't make the proper rotors for their cars? Thanks
