Having recently purchased a used RT, I discovered that the custom cat-back exhaust system, which consisted of Flowmaster 40 mufflers with 3" tailpipes and 4" tips, was the worst sounding set of duals that I have ever heard!! I love a nice exhaust, but this set was truly unbearable!! The worst part was the constant loud drone that sounded like a WWII V1 Rocket flying along in the back seat!! The shift to MDS only increased the irritating noises!! Perhaps the only thing louder was my wife’s demand that I had to somehow return the RT and get my money back!! I do admit that a supplier’s Web Page does state: “The 40 Series generates interior resonance within the vehicle as well, so if you want to really hear your exhaust system inside the vehicle as well as outside it, the 40 Series is for you.” No thanks!! Not in my High Performance Luxury Touring Wagon!!!!

Hallelujah!! The cure was found!! With the help of Randy Johnson of Randy’s Mufflers we redesigned and reworked the system from the Flowmasters back. The results have been to provide a pleasant, medium volume, powerful sounding, mellow exhaust tone without drone or resonance. The radio can now be listened to at the same volume level whether cruising or coasting. By listening closely you can still hear the MDS shifts. However, at full throttle the system emits a full throated howl like a Formula I GP car! My wife is smiling again, and so am I!!

Two 12" Glasspacks were added on each side. One to the rear of the Flowmaster, then an offset 2.5" tailpipe, then another 12" Glasspack, and finally a 2.75" tip ending flush with the vertical face of the rear bumper!

Nothing sounds as bad as all the little Hondas and Nissans buzzing around, the kids driving them think that adding a crappy muffler and super low profile tires somehow gives them a hot rod.

My 12 year old daughter picked a race for us last week...a Honda came buzzing up beside us at a light, buzzing and droning so loud she rolled down her window and yelled at the kid "hey, do you know your muffler has a hole in it!"

For some reason, the boy didnt take too kindly to that!

Kept reving his engine till he got a few back fires...

So my daughter sticks her head out the window again, and yelled."So, what kinda muffler is that, a FartMaster?"

The kid got even more upset, flips her the bird.

She just smiled, looked over at me and winked, then leaned out and yelled at the kid.
"you know, our station wagon can kick your ***"

Now, I dont normally put up with my children cursing or being rude, but when she called his muffler a fartmaster, I just about died laughing!

So the light goes green, and this kid is going to show us he can drive just like the people in the movie "The Fast and the Furious" and he floors it, might even have gotton a few inches of rubber....

We let him get a few car lengths ahead, then I let her rip...get up beside him, smile and wave, catch the next shift and blow by him...get up a little further, decide to slow down and wait till he catches up...he does, still mad, still shooting the finger at us...still sounding like a chainsaw with no muffler!

We let him rant for a few seconds, then get tired of listening to the buzz, and let the Hemi do what it does best!

At the next light, he slowly buzzs up, shoots us the bird one last time, then turned right and took off.

I cant see driving around in any car that sounds that bad, the noise would ruin the fun, and give me a headache.

I grew up on old school V8s, GTO, Javalins AMXs, Chargers and Challengers, heck, I even had a 50 Ford with a Flathead V8...

Ya want big bad sounds, try a AMX with the inserts pulled out of the side pipes!

Not real sure what these kids think adding those crudy mufflers does, I cant see any real HP gain, and the noise isnt impressive, just annoying....

You didn't mention if the backseat of his car was filled with boom-boxes. I think that is why they have the loud crappy muffler...to tell if the engine is running.

Your story was great, got some chuckles from it.

I swear these kids are going to be deaf by the time their 30 or so....and this is from a guy who grew up in the 70s with the Doobie brothers and the Stones...
They got more juice running their radios than I got running my wood shop!
It is almost funny to see a kids with 5 or 6 grand worth of amps, stereo and speakers, crammed into a $500.00 beat to crap used Honda...

Oh well, to each his own...

Flowmaster 40's are loud. I had them on a 01 Ford pick-up with high performance cats. The truck on start up would wake up the neighbors. I realize that it's a personal choice on your system, but the best sounding system to me is the MagnaFlow. I've had Bassani's, Flowmaster 40's & 50's, and Borla on various cars and trucks and for the money, I'd go with M/Flow's any day of the week. Nice low rumble but not too loud as to be annoying in the interior.

Let's hope she doesn't try that with a gangbanger or she be shot with more than a bird.

 

Most of the time she keeps her mouth shut, but this kid was just begging for it...
She is a pretty smart girl, knows when to pick her fights, and when to be quite.

If the kid had looked like trouble, I would have told her to quit...

Which brings up a question, or maybe a "poll" of sorts...

How often do you get challanged either to an outright from the light race, or one of those where a guy in a mustang or or something like that runs up on you on the freeway and wants to see if the Magnum is really as fast as it looks?

I darn near have people trying to "beat" me almost everyday, from the kids in the rice rides to punks in pick ups...

About the only serious run I have had so far was a young guy in a mid 90s mustang, with a blower and nitrous...
and we called it a draw when we hit 120 on IH 10...ran out of room to run!


I have had people, all kinds from all walks of life, just about hit me trying to get a look at the car...

Pull up to a light on state highway 249...

Here I am, a 46 year old white guy in a black Magnum.

Guess what slides up right beside me?

A 40s something black guy in a Cool Vanilla...

Exact same car, same wheels, just opposite colors...

He rolls down his window, grinning from ear to ear.

I roll down my window, grinning just as wide.


He says" I really like your car!"

I said, "I admire your choice in automobiles"

We both look in the rear view mirror, and then all around...people are staring at the two cars, staring at us, pointing...

He starts to laugh, I start to laugh, the light goes green, he looks at me, I nod, and we both floor it up to the next light.

When the pack catches up, they are actually hanging out the windows of their cars, yelling and screaming and whooping it up.

He looks over at me, says,"oh yeah!" waves and turns left into his subdivision.

I dont think either one of us quit grinning all day!

This is one fun car!

This guy is the only Cool Vanilla R/T I have seen...
There are a lot of the sixs, but so far, only that one R/T in that color...
Have seen one other Black R/T on this side of town, just last week on Antonie between Gulf Bank and 249 in a storage building parking lot...
See several of the Gun Metal silver R/Ts...not a single red one yet!

One thing all the drivers have in common, they are all grinning!

Looking for a good price on the K&N CAI kit...seems all the speed shops I used to buy from are gone..Brocks downtown is gone, and Competition Sales said they can't get it...
Any ideas?

Going to "chip" the car next month also...
