Default Throttle response or lack thereof

Occasionally, and usually in the middle of heavy traffic when I need to accelerate, there is no response from the throttle. The engine does not die, it just starts slowly heading to idle. I have recently noticed that it will at times not shift out of D to 4 or 3, but it will shift to Neutral, and throttle response is there. Shift back to D and 'nothing'. Play with the pedal for a few seconds and it comes back. The frequency that this occurs has been increasing. Took it to one shop when the check engine light was on. They said the code said there was a problem with the Tranny, but could not get more info on this and recommended I take it to a factory dealer. Sometimes the check engine light comes on, but mostly not. It goes out when the engine is turned off and may not come back on the next time this happens. The tranny sometimes acts sluggish too, but will correct itself. I'd hate to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with no cell signal.
