Tapping into lighter for Ignition power
I have been emailed quite a few times about how I did my stereo head unit install, and how I got the Ignition Controlled power to the head unit.
FIRST!!! MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION!!!!! What I did was take a sharp knife and cut around the insulation of the wire(i think it was red) on the back of the lighter socket, about 3 inches from the end of the plug that goes into the lighter. This way you can pull the insulation back just abit to expose a small amount of wire. Then I took a nail and made a hole so that I could insert a wire that I ran up to the wire harness that plugs into the back of the radio. I then soldered the wire in the hole made by the nail and used electrical tape to prevent any shorting.
If you can figure out the guage(thickness) of the wire you can go to radio shack and buy a "TAP". It's a plastic thing with a metal splice that taps into existing wiring. You don't even have to use tape because it is self sealing. This is the best way to go. If you have any wire laying around that is the same size of the lighter socket's wire, you can take it to radio shack and then tell them you need a tap/splice.
If anyone knows the color of the wire at the back of the lighter plus and the guage please post it here so I can update my text here.
