Default Ignition key won't turn

I have a 2006 Magnum sxt. Went to start it this morning and the key won't turn. When it goes in the ignition I get the dinging with when the door is open, but no horn. Do I have a battery issue or is it a problem with the ignition cylinder?

Have you tried moving the steering wheel back and forth? A battery won’t keep the ignition from turning.

I'm having the same issue with my ignition switch/key, but thankfully not every time i try it... I thought the key may be bent causing it to get stuck, so 'flattened' it in a table vice: I've used de-icer spray and WD40 which both helped me get the key in and out, but still... I've wiggled the steering wheel and swiftly turned the key through off and then out, which worked on occasion, but I'm now dreading getting in and out the damn thing and the key either getting jammed in there or refusing to turn. I've read there's an ignition recall on the 08 model so I'm assuming its only a matter of time but i'm not exactly known for my patience!

There can be several issues going on. On some models, if there isnt battery power to the system, the key won't unlock the cylinder. This is mostly the FOBIK type keys without a key blade. The other issue is that the security system doesnt recognize the key. Either the chip has died or is dying or the key is the wrong one for the car.
The last issue is with worn tumblers in the ignition switch or the key is worn badly. If you have a bunch of keys on your key ring, this is a likely problem. No more than 2-3 house keys need to be on a car key. The extra weight really wears out ignitions. If you're mechanically inclined, you can switch the tumblers out for new ones. The easiest thing to do is have a generic key VIN cut to your car. A locksmith can decode it and cut one for you. Do not give them the key or they will trace it. Then you'll be in the Sam situation you're already in. Make sure you are holding onto the key when they cut the new key whether it's a dealer or locksmith. They will try to take the easy way out and trace it. They can be pretty sly about it. Especially the dealer.
