Default 5.7 "bottom" rebuild?

Is such a thing possible?
Mechanic came out today and said I need a "new motor" and that the "bottom end" is where the problems are.
I cannot afford a "new" motor and we were told the 2005 was the only Mag that used that motor.
Please help.

Check out this 5.7L interchange guide. Chrysler 5.7L Interchange Guide

When Chrysler designed the 5.7L engine, they included provisions for VCT and MDS in the design even though not used initially. If going with just a block swap, any 2003-2008 should work, however, be aware that the trucks didn't get MDS until 2007 so you'd have to swap over the mds parts if you get a truck block pre 2006. The magnum got mds in 2005.

You should have no problem finding a 2005 magnum or chrysler 300 locally at a junk yard for full engine swap. A whole lot were made and you see very few on the road anymore. I just did a salvage yard search and I'm showing 30 at various salvage yards within 100 miles of me for around $1600.

Slightly incorrect, VCT (Variable Cam Timing, or Variable Valve Timing as it is known now VVT) was not designed into the initial engine for 2003; MDS was. The block had to be redesigned to accommodate VVT starting in 2009 and is not backwards compatible with any 03-08. MDS was not used in trucks until 2006 and only in 1500's. The 05-08 LX engines are identical, the reason he said it was 05 only was because of the ignition system. 2005 LX uses the same crap coil and wire setup the 03-05 Rams used; it was done away with for 2006. Any 05-08 LX engine will work, all you have to do is swap the appropriate valve covers and coils on.
