66 Coront "Help"
Bought a field find, a 66 Coronet 440/383, 4 spd, bench seat, convertable and #s match. I've been told there were only 58 of these cars built, can someone guide me to more research avenues to confirm this? Also any info on this ride would be helpful. VIN# WH27G61118653, I ran the VIN and all is correct. I'm just starting to collect parts to restore this car. Trunk pan, inner/outer (4) quarterpanels and 1/4 door skins need replacing, this seems extensive but the floor pans, rails and the rest of the sheet metal is fine. Motor/tranny have been rebuilt and the car is very drivable.
Here's the best place to get your numbers from: http://www.gvgovier.com/ He can decode your fender tag, which includes the VIN, and reproduce broadcast sheets for your car too. He has a section in Mopar Collectors Guide and that magazine is among the best to find parts for your Coronet since it is mainly a big classified ad for Mopars and Mopar parts original, new, used, buy, sell, trade, etc.
The number 58 is correct, per Galen's books. It's a rare, unusual car! Sounds like you lucked out with the frame and floor pans.... on a convertible sitting in a field, the floor pans were usually the first thing to rust through. That's a car I'd love to have myself, being the owner of a '67 R/T convertible! Feel free to PM me with any questions, your fender tag info, etc. if you need more info.
Thanks for your reply. I've been doing a bit of traveling and things are slowing down for now. I chomping at the bit to get started on a restoration which is where my delima starts. Sheet metal, I found a company (http://www.autobodyspecialt.com/) which carries most of the sheet metal I need. Although, I don't know the quality of sheetmetal, my sheet metal guy says he can make it fit but that still leaves misc. sheet metal, bumpers, lights etc. I found a 2 dood hard top for $3000.00 I could use for a doner - as reluctant as I am to be the butched of a classic, this option seems to be the least expensive and puts to use, good original sheet metal for a good cause.
Do you know the reputation of Auto Body Specialties or any other means of original top quality parts?

The repro stuff from Autobody Specialties is usually made offshore and the quality is substandard most of the time. If you can find a decent source for used parts that would be a better way to go, depending on what you need. If the hardtop for 3k is in good shape, I'd tend to agree with your reluctance to cut it up. Try combing through Hemmings or MCG, and contact some of the used parts advertisers in there first to see what they have.
I forget if it was in the Year One or The Paddock catalog but they said to plan on spending the price of the replacement panel to make it fit. If your quarter panel cost $800 then the labor to get it right will be about the same. Check out a company called Goodmark they are making quality replacement panels too.
