Tranny Help
I have a '99 dodge neon with an 3-spd automatic. Im into racing and I havent done any mods to the transmisson yet. I want to be able to get off the line quickly so I will soon be replacing the valve body on the transmisson for a high performance one. I would like to know if there is anything else I need to replace to help me get off the line quickly enuff to help keep up with some standard cars.
not a lot of us ameature builders use that automatic for racing--it can be made strong but takes more money and effort to just converting to a 5 speed. Very predictable for drag racing if your racing often enough though. I would think a good performance build up with blue line plates (if they're available for that car)--or see what ModernPerformance's package has in it. If you're seriously racing you might find or have built up a higher stall converter . . . but you might want a lot more cam to make use of it on the top end. won't be as driveable in traffic and might build more heat.
I'd start by asking modern's tech line what their performance build up contains/does for $250 and then i'd call summit racing and see what parts they have available for the 3 speed--they'd likely have a couple choices for plates/rebuild kits.
good luck.

Depends on what you are looking to do with the car and what your plans are.
The VB is a good choice and it's fairly easy to do. But, there are also other things youc an do as well.
Performance/Race rebuild.
Transfer Gears.
Limited Slip Differential.
Just to name a few.
Also, you are going to want to put a secondary transmission cooler on the car since the new VB will elimintate your torque converter lockup feature. Without it the tranny will build up quite a bit of heat so the cooler is a CYA preventative measure.
Also, I happen to have a built ATX myself. If you want ATX friendly advice let me know, I've spent quite a few years screwing around with ATX's.
