Head gasket
Nope. Not all 1st gens. I do believe the problem was corrected for the 1998-1999 model years but 97 may of also been corrected.
The easies way to check is between intake runner one and two you should see a metal tab sticking out from between the head and top of the block with little rivets on it. If you see that tab then you've got the updated MLS headgasket.

99 where the only year with the headgasket fixed my 98 had to have it replaced and I belive I've read where only the 99-up neons had it fixed. Mine cost 600 bucks to have it fixed so its not a fun ordeal (had to have the heads milled)
