engine knocking
i have a 95 neon with 124k on it. when i start it in the morning the engine sounds like a frickin machine gun for like twenty minutes. once it warms up the knocking goes away. when i start the car the rest of the day its fine unless i let it sit for hours. than it knocks again but not as bad as when you let it sit overnight. any suggestions? im thinking maybe an oil pump. im gonna have the oil pressurechecked this week sometime. i also changed the oil and put 2 and 1/2 quarts 10w30 and 2 quarts lucas treatment.
i live in pa. its around 30 degrees in the morning when i start my car. however it was doin it in the fall when it was around 50 degress in the morning. also, when i start it in the morning it takes about 5 seconds of cranking for it to finally start.
instead of cranking away, you should turn the key to the on position, let the fuel pressure build (you can hear it if you listen closely behind you), then repeat and the car should start right up, if this is the case..... you probably need a fuel pump.
as for the knocking, does it still do it with the lucas?

i do let the pressure build up. i turn it on for a good 5 seconds than crank it. it takes about 5 seconds of cranking after i do that. also, it is still knocking after the lucas. it only knocks bad when the engine is completely cold. like in the morning when i first start it. i also found this out. if istart it in the morning and let it run for a minute or two, than shut the engine off and start it back up, the knocking quiets alot. im thinking a oil pump. i have to wait till this weekend to get the pressure checked. any suggestions?
kinda sounds like its just your lash adjusters filling with oil and going to zero lash once you get good oil pressure. usually the oil will seep out after it sits for a long time.
does it sound like every cylinder is doing it or is it every other 4. and also does the knocking speed up when the engine revs then goes away after 2-2.5k? or keeps going with thereving?

i cant really tell if every cylinder is doin it. the knocking does speed up when the engine revs. it goes to an almost silence once the engine gets warm up. it does not sound as loud after a couple miles of running
take a long screwdriver and put it against your ear and find out where its actually coming from and once youve found out where listen very carefully to the noise its producing.
