2003 Neon SE - Horrible Gas Mileage (14mpg) and Lack of Power
Hi all,
I have a problem with my wife's car, an automatic 2003 Neon SE: it has a horrible gas mileage - 14 mpg city driving and lack of power. It has 80k miles.
I'm comparing the lack of power to my manual 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS (4 cyl, 2.4L) which might not be really accurate, yet the Dodge power is feeling way lower than the Mitsubishi, which I don't think it should be the case.
Changed the spark plugs, had a full fuel system cleaning done at Meineke, changed the air filter, checked the tire pressure... no improvement. The check engine light is not on... I don't even know if the SE has a check engine light, I didn't notice it, maybe I should go at AutoZone and directly use an ODB2 scanner to check it ?
Any ideas ?
Thank you,
Danny[/align]

RE: 2003 Neon SE - Horrible Gas Mileage (14mpg) and Lack of Power
I just hit 80k miles but back at about 75k I started having a drastic drop-off in mileage too. No codes on the dash. I went to O'Reilly's Auto Parts and got me a direct-fit Bosch on sale for $24.95... gained 10 mpg from the swap (back up around 36 mpg combined city and highway now).

RE: 2003 Neon SE - Horrible Gas Mileage (14mpg) and Lack of Power
Guys,
I changed the O2 sensor with a Bosch from AutoZone. Now the problems started:
- the computer started throwing the P0132 code for the new sensor;
- I disconnected the battery to see if the code comes back and it came;
- I changed again the O2 sensor with the old one and reset the PCM again;
- after a while, P0700 came and the car is in limp mode (the transmission isn't changing higher than the 2nd gear), but no more P0132
Please help ! Could the O2 sensor be causing transmission codes ??? My next plan of action would be to return and replace the new O2 sensor at AutoZone, reset the computer again and see what codes (if any) it will throw... Any ideas ?
Thanks,
Danny
