Default Speedometer

97 Neon Sport with 162,000 miles. Yesterday my speedometer needle started jumping around until it just stopped working. Today it worked fine for about 35 miles and again jumped around until it stopped working. When it went crazy yesterday it was during a major rain storm.

Does anyone have any easy fix ideas!

Its either the speed sensor or its the typical bad gauge cluster.

I have replaced my VSS and my speedo works when it wants to you should not have to remove anything it is located towards the back of the tans on the drivers side it has two wires on it that you will have to cut and splice a new harness on it. the only thing is if you still have your stock air box you will have to remove it to get easy access to it.

Usually it's just the pin either on the cluster itself or the jumper that needs to be resoldered. There are how-to's floating around. Try neons.org if it isn't pinned here somewhere.

Best of luck!

I can't link it right now from this computer for some reason, but look at the top of the page in the 1st gen neon forum, and you will see the picture of what has to be soldered.

My neighborhood mechanic says its not the cluster. He says its the speed sensor because the cruise control is also cutting out when the speedometer goes. He says the cruise needs a speed reading to function properly and a problem at the dash board wouldn't cause the cruise to cut out. Does this make sense? And, do I really have to splice in a new speed sensor?
