I have a 98 neon that the tach doesn't read even close to actual rpm. so ignore the tach, put the car in park, mash your foot to the floor and hit the rev limiter (around 7000) these motors can handle that no problem we race them in circle track which is a lot more abusive to the this quick test.

for now lets completely IGNORE the trans!!!!!

Is the transmission problem causing the engine problem, or is the engine problem causing the transmission problem? Or are they completely unrelated? The fact that theres no useable code for me to work off of makes it more difficult.

Basically what happens is when I start the car and press the gas, the revs climb slowly. When it gets to about 3500rpm, the revs stop climbing, and the car sounds like its at redline... meaning I could continue to rev it, but havent because it really doesnt wanna rev past that... It just sounds like its pinned. Not revved totally out, not hitting a rev limiter.. it just kinda tops out, and the revs stop climbing. Im not sure exactly where it will stop revving. The car will move under its own power, and reverse also works, but it will only do about 35mph. I changed the fluid and filter. The cat was recently replaced (not sure if thats relevant, but it does rule out a clogged cat). It almost seems like the tach is reading double- but it doesnt sound like its running on less than 4 cylinders. It idles perfectly fine, its just as soon as I start to rev it, it doesnt want to rev up normally. I reset the ecu as well.
Ok, lets think. Hmmmm. No code but car wont go past 3500rpm. I would get a volt meter and test your TPS sensor. I think your problem is in the TPS sensor. Move the wires, just dont pull to hard and see if the car reacts or throws a CEL. Your wires could be messed up to your TPS sensor or your sensor could be done all together. If these checks out good we move on to the MAP sensor and do the samething.

hmm, you can unplug the tps and it'll still rev past 3500

I think maybe he should check cam/crank timing, catalytic converter, get a real scanner and see pcm data.

yes, hold your trip button, turn you key on - off - on - off - on and release the trip button..... your gauges will go up in quarters and max out, then it will tell you the codes.. it wont blink, it will tell you *example* P0101. It takes alot to trip your check engine light btw.... but i dont know anything about limp mode.. ive never had one go into limp mode

My apologizes for thread jacking but im also having the kinda same issue as you. I got the car for FREE of a friend. The car is in limp mode, wont come out of 2nd i believe. however no cell, only threw code for battery disconnected. I can drive it but it red lines around 35mpg. I think it might be the wiring harness. Somewhere i think there is a cut or something.

Did you fix your issue with your car.
