timing belt
going to change timing belt on my neon. I like to know what belt
is the best to get for a "99" neon? And changing head casket.
Is it better to get it from dealer or part store?

I like to look for as cheap as I can with parts so I only go to the dealership when autoparts store dont carrry what Im lookin for. So in my op a autoparts place is the way to go. Really isnt a timing belt better than the rest so I would just pick out one and replace it.

An MLS head gasket from a dealer is way more then one from a parts store, but still about $40 ~$60 depending on where you buy it.
A lot of people say to get the Goodyear Gator timing belt, but I think that is overkill. Proper tensioning is the key to good timing belt wear. If you tension it properly when you install it, you should have no problems.
When you replace a timing belt, buy a timing belt kit instead. It has everything you need for a better job - including the tensioner pulley(s).
While you are at it, since you are replacing the timing belt, you really should go ahead and replace the water pump too. If it goes bad, it will tear up your new belt and you will do it again. Cost is about $40 to $60 depending on where you buy it.
I bought a timing belt kit, water and oil pump from an eBay reseller and it has been running great and I have about 17000 miles on it since I rebuilt the motor. My car had 175K on it when I got it, and I had no idea what had ever been done to the car before I got it.
Question. Why are you removing the head? If your compression level is good, no leaking oil,no issues with unexplained water loss or water/oil mixing, and your valves are not clattering like a B####, then you don't need to go that far. You have to replace the intake and exhaust gaskets as well if you do. Now if you are going to take off the head anyway, then depending on how many miles the engine has on it, I would seriously consider having the head redone. They will put in new seals, bearings, springs, regrind the valves/seats, etc. and really make your car ready for the next 100K.

In my opinion Goodyear make crappy belts and crappy tires. I Personally insist on Gates brand belts
BG is right do a W/P while ur in there and Dont touch the head unless you have to, FelPro make good quality headgaskets if you need to replace it
thats what I'd buy

Thanks guys for all the tip. I have a friend who work for a part store. He got
me Gates for timing belt. Plus I got a new water pump. Cause I was told if I
don't change the water pump and if the old I would go. All the work we did
to the timing belt was a waste of time. Head gasket we are going to check
everything first before change it. Again thanks for all the tips. Will let you
all how everything come out.
