my 98 neon highline's check engine light on and the code when i got it plugged in is p0743 torque converter circuit electrical problem. does anyone know what needs to be replaced and i so how to do it. please me and my fiance love this car and need it to pass nj state inspection.

 

There is an electrical connector on the front side of the transmission where the torque converter lockup selenoid is located. It is quite likely that time and gunk have caused the connection to the selenoid to be impaired. Disconnect the wire and clean out both the connector and the point on the sensor where it connects using something like a spray can of MAF cleaner (which won't harm electrical circuits). Disconnect your battery for about 2 minutes (or use the clear codes function on an OBD-II reader) to clear the codes. Crank it and drive it around and make sure you get going at highway speeds (over 45) several times. That may do it.

If that does not help and the code comes back, then you need to purchase a new torque converter lockup selenoid. It is easy to replace and the part is not expensive.
