my neon will not staying idol when you push in the clutch i have a 1998 neon sport manual and i just changed the idol control air valve and it still wont work right please help......and if anyone knows anything on how to make my speedometer to work let me know please
Idling problem:
1) Check for any error codes that may be stored. Not every problem lights the Check engine light (CEL). To read any codes on your neon, put the key in the ignition and cycle it to ACC on-off-on-off-on within 5 seconds. As the CEL flashes, count the number of flashes. This represents the code. An example would be flash-flash-flash-flash, pause, flash-flash-flash, which would be a Code 43, single or multiple cylinder misfire. A list of codes can be found HERE or HERE.
2) Check all your vacuum lines. Especially the ones from the charcoal cannister.
3) Check the plugs, plug wires, and coil.
4) Check your fuel pressure at the rail. Sometimes a low pressure at idle can indicate a fuel pump/fuel filter issue.
5) Check the O2 sensors. Sometimes as they start to go bad, there won't be any error codes thrown, but replacing them will fix it anyway because they are intermittent. If it is been 75K miles or more, then you would need to look at replacing them anyway.
6) Take off and clean your throttle body. Especially around the area where the IAC and throttle position sensor (TPS) are located.
7) Check the EGR.
8) Check the compression.
9) Check to make sure you don't have a clogged up catalytic converter.
Speedo problem:
It is common for 1st gen neons to have a cold solder joint problem on the circuit board for the instrument cluster. It affects every guage on the board in different ways. Read the thread below.
