I have a 1996 Neon, SOHC with 200K, this morning at a stop sign it started chattering and then died, there was coolant everywhere underneath the car. I do not know the history of this car or what has been changed/not changed. I turns over hard now too. Could this be a water pump/timing belt issue or both? Possibly more damage the way it sounded? I do not know much about these cars, any help is appreciated, thanks.

 

I have it all torn apart and the water pump went out and seized up. The timing belt did not move it basically just chewed the teeth off the belt. I have new parts ready to go in, hopefully I can get the timing correct.
