Default 01' Neon Random No Start. Check Engine Light For PCM

Alright guys my dad has an 01' Neon 3 speed that is having some start-up problems. The check engine light is for the PCM. I forget the exact code but its something along the lines of "PCM internal storage" code.

The car will start up fine sometimes but other times is will start and barely stay running, a lot of smoke which I believe is unburnt fuel from the exhaust, and if you try to put it in gear it will shut right off. I did a search a little while ago and it seems like the only known cure for this is to replace the PCM.

Is it possible for me to get one out of a junkyard just so I make sure it comes out of an 01' Neon with the same motor and trans or does it need to be calibrated to each specific car. Is there some shop out there that you guys know of that sells good ECU's for a nice price if I can't do the junkyard thing?

Excuse my ignorance I don't know much of anything about these cars and I appreciate the help in advance. My dads car is currently sitting in the 3rd level of a parking garage in the city where it left him sit. We're gonna go back to the car later tonight or tomorrow hoping it starts right up so we can at least get it home so I can do whatever needs to be done. Thanks again guys!

Alright we went back into the city and I disconnected the battery for about 5 minutes and started it up and it was okay for the most part. Was smoking like a chimney the whole way home but we got it home. Check engine light was out initially and my dad didn't take notice if it came back on during the ride home. Still looking for answers about the junkyard PCM. Thanks!

Oh and the code that it threw is P0601.
