Vibration trouble
So I drive a 2001 Neon RT with a manual transmission. I found a slit in the hose running from the throttle body to the air filter recently. This caused surging and massive shaking. I have since replaced the hose, however ever since when i start the car it jumps to 2000 rpms before idling just below 1000. I know that this isn't too big of a deal however it is worrying when i notice that the car is also vibrating when I'm at a stop and while i'm moving it makes the ride a bit rough. Any suggestions as to the problem?
Two immediate things jump to my mind.
One is the IAC (intake air control) sensor and the other is the TPS (throttle position sensor). You won't always get an error code when these two sensors start going wonky (I didn't).
Both are located on the backside of the throttle body (closest to intake manifold). Easily removed. Just remove the connector and get a deep socket to remove them.
Try cleaning them first - get a can of MAF/MAP cleaner - won't damage sensors. Clean the MAF/MAP sensor (depends on model year, mine has both) too while you are at it.
Better still, just remove the entire throttle body and give it a good cleaning all the way around. If that doesn't work, then you can try to replace them (autozone.com IAC $73, TPS $52, MAP $50 (unlikely you need this one)).
Also, I would be on the lookout for vacuum leaks in other areas too. They can cause rough idling. A fuel pump/vacuum tester tool is $10 at harborfreight.com (Item #93547)
