Default 2003 Neon A/C Problem

I am prety sure my A/C in not working because I was low on freon. The compressor will not turn on unless I put a paper clip in the relay. I put the paper clip in the relay and put my freon in. I put the relay back in and the compressor would not turn on. I put the paper clip back in and the engine stalls out when the compressor turns on and it smells like burning brakes. Is this a seized compressor? Valve stuck somewhere? What should I do to get it working again. 2003 Neon SE

Sounds like the clutch on the compressor is shot to hell, that, or as you say, the bearing in the compressor is seized. Time to replace.

Not really. The hardest parts are 1) loosening the bolts on the power steering pump so you can take the belt off. The hardest one is the one that is on the bracket on the block, but you only have to loosen it. 2) the stinking bolts in the compressor cannot be pulled all the way out as the radiator which is right behind it. Fortunately, you can leave them on after you get them out of their hole and drop it out the bottom. Of course, you do have to remove all of that flipping plastic under panels too.

Since it sounds like you have already bled the system, you won't have that to deal with. Replace the dryer and the seals. Cheap.

Wait a minute, scratch that. You have a 2nd gen car which means you have the serpentine belt with auto-tensioner. Way easier to remove that belt then my 1st gen one. All you have to do is borrow a belt tool from autozone (or get a long handled wrench) and just turn the tensioner clockwise to get the belt off.

Then it is the same as mine. three bolts on the compressor, drop it out the bottom, after removing all the plastic crap.
