transaxle
I was just wondering, the other day i was helping a friend change her tire, and i Jacked up the right front. The left front tire was on the ground and the car was in gear(stick shift). I noticed i couldn't turn the tire with it in gear. Shouldn't it turn, otherwise it would be like a locked rear end and squeal aroung corners? Am i missing something? Thanks in advance.
If you put it in neutral, you should be able to turn it fairly easily with only the brake drag slowing it down (assuming both the brakes are in good shape as well as the bearings).
With it in gear, you have to be able to overcome the engine (and its compression) as well as the other tire on the ground's resistance. The differential will allow slippage, but there is still some added resistance.
So long answer short - no.
If you had both wheels in the air, then if you have the strength to turn it over past the engines compression, then yes, both wheels will turn (assuming limited slip differential).
