Default 2005 Dodge Neon - new missing

Car has been running fine. Tonight when pulling away from a stop sign it missed about 3 times. Tank read 1/4 full so we went & filled it up. Pulled out onto the interstate & it began missing severely. Would ebb for 1/2 mile, then begin again. Check engine light either stayed fully on or began flashing, then back to fully on. We pulled off at first exit available. Everything looked fine under the hood (nothing obvious). Gas cap may have been not fully tight so made sure that was tight. Drove remaining 40 miles home with no misses but engine light remained on. Put code reader on it but no code available. Pulled out & drove it down the highway again. After about 2 miles turned around & when I went to accelerate again it missed 3 or 4 times again (like it did initially at the stop sign prior to filling). Went back to check codes again and again-no code.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Whens the last time it had a tune up? Did you ever get the code out of it? Do you have access to a scanner to check pending and history?

I know oil change was done in April (1500 miles?) as well as I believe new timing belt and a few other items. I will have to check with husband to see if they did any other tune-up items.

The code reader he has is a 'big banana' type (not sure the brand name) - it reads no codes available. Will have to check with a local mechanic to see if he has something to check history.

Just trying to find some suggestions before I take it into him with a light, no codes & a miss that comes & goes when it feels like it!!!!

Could be a multiple things. The best thing you can do is when the check engine light is on, scan it quick to see the code. If it has data logging see if it has a missfire counter. I always start with a tune up, then check fuel pressure, smoke test the motor for vacuum leaks, check vacuum with a gauge, and last drive it while its acting up with a data logger to watch your sensors. Could be a restricted exhaust or a bad injector also. Any good technician has a basic diagnosis fee and should be able to trace it fairly easy.
