Stock CD changer
Hi Folks,
My daughter has a new Neon with the in dash CD changer. It 'kept' 5 of the CDs (meaning that it would not eject them) so I took it back to the dealer. They were quick to replace the changer and now this one has 'kept' 3 more CDs. I took it to the dealer today and they said "You are playing CD-R/W CDs and they are not covered under warranty" meaning that I can only play 'store bought' CDs. I'd think that in this day and age that any CD changer worth a plug nickel wouldn't care.
So my questions to you good folks is
1. Is the dealer feeding me hogwash and if you believe so how do I get it through their heads that a CD is a CD is a CD
2. Anybody else encountered this?
Thanks in advance,
Bo

Yes, i agree that now a days all cd players should be made compatible to play cd-r's or cd-r/w's but it isnt always the case. Just a few years ago it was actually something to look for on higher end cd players to make sure they could read all the burnable information on the cd's. In most cases it wasnt a factor of the cd player keeping the cd's it was more of an issue with the player being able to read them. The issue I think your running into with the cd's not ejecting is the fact that there are different types of cd's to burn information onto, and with these different cd's they are also have slightly different dimensions. There are Data cd's and Music cd's. Now the music cds are made thinner are a little less rigid due to the fact that they probably wont be carrying as important of information on them, and so they cost less. Data cds on the other hand are thicker and this is where many car stereos have issues with ejecting them. I would say that the dealer isnt feeding you complete hogwash, but I definitly think they should have brought this issue up the first time you had it fixed through them. I have ran into similar issues, but most often it was a cd player malfunction.
Hope some of this ramble makes sense!
As the above thread mentioned, there are various types of CD-R/CD-RW cds out there.... You dont use CD-RW cds in any cd player that does NOT say it will play those. If there isnt a label saying it will on the cd player, dont put them in there.
Also, some cd players simply dont like specific brands of CD-R's. They will sit in the cd player and just spin....this can lead to them not wanting to eject because the cd player cant read it...so it thinks its empty even if it shows theres a cd there.
It wasnt until 2000-01 that most stock factory cd players would even play CD-R's. For a long time only the high end models and luxury cars would play them on an everyday basis.....My suggestion, get a CD Changer that sits in the car...with an aftermarket head unit....better reliability...and you can get the 12-20 cd changers

Thanks for the replies. I still have a problem accepting the fact that a CD player is not a CD player. I don't see the sizes being any different. I took some discs at random and measured them to be
CD Thickness Width
Audiobahn .0444" 4.725"
TDK .0463" 4.720"
Store bought CDs
Womack .0445" 4.735"
Reba .0482" 4.720"
T.K. .0468"
Maroon5 .0442
So it seems to me that the CD-R/W dimension are within the dimensions of the store bought ones.

For starters, CD-RW cds should NEVER be used to burn audio cds. You should only use CD-R.
As for your cd-player not being a cd-player, its a stock item and they can choose to do what they want with it. Personally, I have no problem with my stock cd player at all. I would suggest you try an aftermarket cd changer/cd player combo. There are plenty of sites that you can get these at.
The only other option available to you is to see which "brands" of cds the factory cd player DOES like, and simply burn those types of cds.
