Default 03 Neon, rapid power loss...won't go in drive...

I was headed down interstate going around 70 when my Neon just lost power. The lights didn't dim or anything, it just lost drive power. I pulled to the side and killed it. A moment later I started it back up, put it in drive, and it wouldn't go anywhere. While waiting on the tow truck I started it again and it went...but not very far...I was making weird noises and after just a second it lost power again and RPM's went up as I decelerated. Anybody have an idea of what might be wrong with my Neon? Thanks...

Oh, BTW...It's an 03 SXT with 40K on it. I haven't done any mods to it. I've checked the Trans fluid level and it's fine. I've looked in, around, under, everywhere under the hood and I don't see anything that looks broken or any kind of fluid anywhere...

Well, it starts fine and idles fine...I don't think it's the fuel pump, but then again i'm no mechanic. The most likely thing from what i've found (and I pray this is the problem) is maybe a clogged transmission fluid filter. I'm fixing to drop the transmission pan and get messy and see if that might be the problem...if not I think i'm fixing to drop some big bucks...
