Default P0117 even with new temp sensor

Hello,

Just got a neon not long time ago and it looks like it might need some repairs.

it overheated, and I noticed the fan won't come on. If turning a/c on, fan turned on and no more overheating.

I moved some wires left and right, trying to see something obvious, and as a result I got code P0117-ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR LOW

I replaced the sensor near the battery, it had the one with 3 wires on it.

Still, no matter what, P0117 stays on and OBD coolant temp at 260.

Sometimes, after I move a few wires, the code is gone, temp reading OK, but then after some time P0117 is back and temp goes to 260.

If I unplug the sensor completely, then I also get P0118 together with 0117.

I ordered a haynes book to see some diagrams, but until it arrives I was hoping to get some hints. Where do those 3 wires go, so I can check the ohms and see maybe a wire is open... or any other ideas.

thanks!
