Default Have 2000 Neon sohc 2.0. What other years will this engine fit w/o modifying things?

Hi All,
I've got a 2000 Neon, with a 2.0 SOHC, and an auto transmission. The engine and all the drivetrain are in good shape, but the body needs more help than I'd like to give it. Since I much prefer a 5-speed manual trans, and would like a car that's not so beat up, I'd like to find a Neon with a bad engine, good body, and a manual trans--And put my good engine in to it.
What years of Neons with a manual transmission can I put this engine into----Without having to modify anything, or at least very minimal modification? I'm sure any 2000 would be the easiest, but there must be others that would also work well. ?? And would anything other than the engine control module have to go with the engine?
I have searched and read previous threads for a couple of hours, but didn't find this exact scenario. Thanks for any help!

Default Modifying a neon

Are you just looking to put your engine in a better looking neon? If this is your plan, check locally for a better looking neon body. Want ads. Craigslist. Angieslist. Etc.

If you are looking to modify your neon, how far do you plan on going? The sohc 2.0L is the least performance based neon to build. That being said, you should do some research and see which engine best suits your needs and go from there. Budget is also a factor, so finding the right parts for your build determine how low this will take.

The 2gn neons are not very performance built. Unless you are looking to swap in a srt, or at lease a dohc head, there are options but not as rewarding.

2000 2.0L engine will fit 2000-2002, after that they did some minor changes like moving the crank position sensor to rear of the engine just under the starter. You can also get an engine out of 2000-2002 PT cruisers as they use same engines, the only difference is the intake tubes and exhaust headers will just need to be swapped.

You might need to swap the flex plates on the engines inorder to fit the manual transmission.
Are you just looking to put your engine in a better looking neon?

Yes, this is my plan. In searching this forum, and also the Neon.org forum, I think that it would fit in all 1996 to 2002 Neons, maybe with only changing some of the sensors so they will fit the wiring harness plugs. I don't know if the 1995 would also accept my 2000 engine, I haven't seen that specifically.

I've seen some posts about changing wires or pins inside the computer. I would hope to avoid getting into that kind of situation, so the most straightforward swaps are what I'm looking for.

I'd like to have as many years and options available to me for finding a car that will work. Higher performance is not needed. Just having a 5-speed stick instead of a 3-speed auto will be a good enough boost for me!

Thanks to you and the Mad Professor for the input thus far.
