The SOHC has a smaller combustion chamber, enough to raise the c/r on the 2.0L with DOHC pistons from 9.8:1 stock to ~10.1: 1 with the SOHC head on. I don't remember the exact sizes, something like 48cc for the SOHC vs. 54cc for the DOHC.

With the taller deck on the 2.4L, you'll no longer be an interference engine like the 2.0L is. Nice if the timing belt/setup does break on you.

Well we have the timing belt tensioner figured out but we ran into another issue today. While turning the engine over by hand we reliazed that the 2.0 SOHC head isnt sticking out has far as teh 2.4L DOHC head did so the timing belt is walking out on the cam sprocket. We tried the 2.4L cam sprocket but its the same. The cam sprocket needs to be shimmed out about a 1/4" or so. We might have a solution to the problem but we're not sure yet. We will post if it does work.

IF someone did this, then I would like to know what they used for a timing cover? We have the 2 timging covers sort of "meshed" together but its not the greatest. Once we get this engine in and running we are going to have to think of something for a timing belt cover cause we sure cant run with out it(dirt track...one rock and were done!).....Any ideas?

Ok we have the timing belt tensioner fully modified and set to go. We also have the cam gear figured out. What we did was cut the center of another cam gear out, then we welded it to the 2.0L cam gear. Now the cam is spaced out from the head the right amount so the belt doesnt walk off the cam gear.

We ran into yet another issue.... the crankshaft pulley from the 2.0 L does not fit on the 2.4L because the large end of crank pulley is on the inside were as the 2.4L has the small pulley on the inside. So the pulley hits on the oil filter boss. So we are going to use the 2.4L crank pulley and use a smaller belt for the alternator. Then we are going to remove the V-belt from the p/s pump and put on a serp. belt from a caravan and use yet another smaller belt for the p/s pump.

We will also have to use the 2.4L engine mount because the 2.0L does not reach the block through the timing cover plus the bolt holes do not line up.

Now one thing you need to take into consideration is that we need to make this look like a 2.0L so mounting all the 2.4L stuff on the block was not an option. Other than the P/S pump pulley this will look pretty darn stock and should not raise any red flags. Its really going to suck if one of the guys really knows his dodge neons and notices the oil filter not in the stock location.

I dont know how this would have worked out with using the 2.4L stuff and not caring if someone knew that its a 2.4L block...
