Default Iceman CAI or K&N CAI?

Hey guys im new here and i figured more of you experienced neon experts could tell me which would be better. I know how they say the stock intake on my 99 neon is like one of the worst kind ever but i was just wondering which would be better to go with. Oh yeah and i have a 99 RT in case yall didnt catch my name.

K&N that goes in stock position, comes with a heat sheild, and has sort of a ram air looking thing

Or this Iceman intake which comes beside the radiator, with an added k&n air filter of course

Thanks for your help guys!

Go with the Iceman, it is far better. Since you have the R/T the Iceman is ideal since you have a standard transmission. I would usually recommend the K & N, but in this case the Iceman is just the better intake and it's a true CAI where the K & N is not. The K & N is far, far better than stock and very easy to install. The Iceman is far more work, but far more rewarding with the best performance. I had a '99 Neon R/T as well and it had the Mopar Performance/Iceman CAI and it was a big improvement in performance.

I actually went shopping for '98-'99 Neon R/T's this weekend for/with someone else and it was my first time driving a stock R/T, mine had several Mopar Performance parts on it when I bought it including the CAI, chrome header, cat-back exhaust, PCM, plug wires and Rex motor mount inserts and it ran far better than the stock R/T's. You will notice a power difference, increased fuel mileage as well as a sound difference, you will hear a nice deep roar when you give it the gas. Get a set of MSD Super Conductor plug wires too, they will smooth out the idle, increase fuel mileage with hundreds of times more spark getting to the plugs, better and quicker throttle response and it will slightly change the sound of exhaust note. There are tons of great things out there for your R/T.

Optimally you want to move the location that your engine draw air from. Un-modified, your engine draws air from near the back of the engine compartment, after it's passed over the hot engine. An aftermarket CAI will draw from outside the engine compartment, probably right behind the headlight. Cooler air means more tightly packed oxygen molecules, meaning better performance. An short ram intake simply has a larger filter through which to draw air, so yes you're getting more air, but it's still HOT air. Some manufacturer will mistakenly label a Short Ram as a Cold Air Intake when in fact it's not. Look for a TRUE CAI, which features longer tubes, and is almost always more expensive than a short ram.

When it comes to choosing a brand, most of them are near the same. AEM, K&N, Mopar, Iceman, they're near the exact same thing. Mopar is most often a re-branded K&N. It comes down to the name you want to appear on the vehicle, or the style. The choice is really up to you. Just stay away from Weapon-R, they're cheap and from what I hear, they're horrible.

K&N typhoon COLD air intake on mine.. i noticed def performance. and a nice lil extra rooooarrrrrrr while feelin that intake kick in more at mid-high rpms........ i keep hearing the main reason the iceman intake is if you live around lots of water..like i kinda dfo.. but im just limitimg myself to keepin the car driven while is safe.. even though i hear the filter behind behind the splash guard kills the changes opf water in the filter... but these neon experts would know way more then me.. im just a sponge of lil bits of input from here and there.... these guys really are the big dogs..lol. goodluck

Go with the iceman or any other true CAI, you don't want a short ram.

Your Neon is newer than the one in question and the K & N Typhoon CAI is great for yours, it's a true CAI for the newer Neons, but on the 1st gen. Neons it isn't because it routes the filter back to the firewall right over the exhaust manifold making it a hot air intake. The Iceman intake on the 1st gen. Neons with the DOHC and manual transmission routes it much like the K & N on your newer Neon putting it down and away from the engine compartment.

Thanks for the help guys im definately gonna go with the iceman now, and to whoever sent me the comment about the spark plugs and wires i forgot to say that my car already has Borla Exhaust, NGK Iridium Plugs, and Vision Motorworks 9mm Racing wires. It smoothed the tone out and also reduced the crackle from my exhaust. Thanks for all of your help guys! And to your roadrunner my dad also has a 70 Challenger R/t 383. Just put the brand new 15 inch rallys on last weekend she sure is looking sharp. Its also b5 blue. Ill try to find a recent pic if i can.
