Im asking these things for a buddy of mine so i might not make sence on some things....
he wants to know about the Radiator Petcock, not sure about what...
also how to change the oil and oil filter
and how to change the tranny fluid.

Please give me details, something an idiot like me would understand, like step by step.

The radiator petcock is a valve at the bottom of the radiator usually at one end or the other(right/left). You unscrew it to drain all of the coolant out.

The oil filter is located on the rear(firewall) side of the engine. The oil pan drain plug is located right by the filter. Remove the oil fill cap, then place the oil drain pan under the oil pan plug and remove the pan plug. Next, unscrew the oil filter. Before installing a new oil filter, fill the new filter with fresh new oil and wipe some of the new oil on the filter gasket. Put the oil pan plug back in and snug it down good. Refill the engine with 4 quarts of oil and check the oil level on the dip stick, add if needed. Put the cap back on and start it up and check for any leaks.

I haven't messed with a FWD automatic transmission, so this will be generalized. Remove the transmissions dip stick. If it has a drain plug, remove it and drain the fluid. Put the plug back in and fill it back up with new fluid. If it does not have a drain plug(which it probably doesn't) you might as well replace the filter as well, because you have to remove the transmissions oil pan anyway. Remove the transmission oil pan. Remove the transmissions oil filter. Put in the new filter. Remove the old transmission pan gasket, make sure the pan is clean and that the gasket surface is also clean on both the pan and the transmission. Put the new gasket and pan back on, snug the bolts but not too tight as this could cause leaks and pan rail warpage. Refill the transmission with the proper amount of the proper type of ATF. Start the car up and check the fluid level(it says how to on the dip stick).

I hope this is sufficient enough information for you to get the job done.[sm=smiley2.gif]

well got all that **** done, but im running into problems. CHanged the oil, drained the anti freeze, but theres a bad *** leak somewhere. like when im fillin the coolant jug thing (the kinda white plstic square shap thing with a sqare cap, you get the point) when i was pooring some water in it so it would drain out to clean it once it got to a certain point it would start leaking like crazy, like a constant flow, and then it would stop once it got to the point where it wasnt leaking anymore. Im trying to make sence to you but as you can tell im not to great with this stuff but im learning. I have a feeling the coolant jug thing is cracked somewhere. And then to the next problem. When i start the car, and i just leave it sit, it starts to over heat. like 5 minutes and its all the way up. and the fans dont seem to be turning on either, but even if they were i dont think it would be able to cool it down. any idead as to whats going wrong?

Did you first fill the radiator itself? If you never filled the radiator itself first, then it will overheat without the fans coming on, because the coolant isn't there to heat up the temperature sensor to turn the fans on. First fill the radiator itself until full, then start the car and let it run. It should then cycle through and pull any extra coolant in from the overflow jug if it needs it. The overflow jug is only supose to be filled to the mark on the side according to the coolant temp, hot or cold, there is two labeled marks. If you were trying to fill the overflow jug up, it cannot be done as it has a tube that vents any excess onto the ground.

ok, ill check that **** out tonight and let ya know whats going on. Also, when it starts to get hot it smokes too, the smoke seems to be coming from the back of the engine, like its coming from up under, think it could be the head gasket?

First, check everything over again that you did during the oil change. The early Neon's are well known for faulty head gaskets, so it is quite possible.

well it was doing this smoking before we even did anything with the oil. checked all that stuff, everything was done right, filled the radiator, and i never filled over the limit in the jug, before it even gets to the lines it starts leakin. im guessing the haed gasket must be shot. how much do you think that will cost me? also, anything else i can do with that other stuff to try and figure out whats going on?
