For the tranny? It's not an issue of proper weight, it's a matter of the proper additive for the synchros. Mopar MTL has it, Redline's MTF has it, and Amsoil has a product out that has it. I don't know why Daimler Chrysler saw the need to switch Neons (and only Neons) over to ATF+4. I had to use it in my tranny for a couple of days (clutch replacement, dealer closed), and there was a noticeable difference in shift quality.

For the engine, I've used Mobil1 5W-30 year round, both here (Albuquerque) as well as the previous 4+ years in New England.

 

Thanks for the information. I am really old school and couldn't handle not changing the fluid in my Neon. Sorry Highline, I hijacked your thread. I just want my car to last until it's paid off I do maintain my vehicles and they last a long time.

In all the Ford and Honda cars that asked for 5W20 they also mentioned if not available then use 5W-30. Ford also went back and recommended 5W20 for late 5.0 L engines and other viehicles that were around before common availability of 5W20. Now that 5W20 is plentiful no big deal but they probably did not change the engine at all between my 2004 and your 2005 engine just the recommended oil for 2005 fo just a squeak better milage. NO BIGGY. If not comfy with good ol 5W-30 then stick to 5W20 no problem. But if all else fails you will not hurt a thing. Happy motoring
