I still think you need to service the transmission. It's not going out but it doesn't have the proper fluid level in it. Hence the reason for the whine. If you continue to run it like that it will surely go out. Please, for the love of your transmission, service it.

And I agree on the oil leakage thing. Try changing your cam position sensor and the oil sending unit.

Yeah, you're talking in the 1K price range (at least) for a tranny rebuild....

My dad said he doesn't know about servicing the transmission (I do have a shop manual for the Neon) but he is wary about touching it besides changing the fluid to the Mopar ATF +4. So I don't know what to do because I'm in what you might call the bolt on stage, I did my own brakes with no problems so yea not really sure. But do you think changing the fluid will do the trick?

*Edit* And CRAP! I was done worrying and now I've gotta think about the transmission... you guys prolly don't want to hear this but right now it crossed my mind to buy a civic. But I want to be different

Ok, well, don't listen to your father...for once that is.

What manual do you have? A haynes? Chiltons? If so they are good references but I would not go off of them for major stuff. For that you need an FSM, the actual Service Manual from a dealer. They run about $100. But pay for themselves over time.

I learned a long time ago that you will never learn if you do not do. I knew nothing about my Nova when I bought it. And at first I was scared to do things. But, I figured out that I'd never learn if I didn't pick up a wrench and start turning bolts. So, with that in mind I picked up the breaker bar and tore things off the car I didn't think I'd need.

I do think that changing the fluid and making the neccesary adjustments wwill help. If you continue to drive the car the way it is you are going to do more harm then good. What's worse? Having a tranny shift weird till you learn or having to replace or rebuild a transmission?

I think rebuilding/replacing one is worse.

Like I said. Give me a day or so and I'll get you that How-To. It's really not hard to service and adjust our tranny's. You just have to get over the fear of doing it.

On a Neon it's about $1500-$4K. Depending on what you need done.

I've got a race rebuild kit for mine here and I was told $4K on the dot to rebuild it. So, I've decided to get allt he neccesary tools and do it myself since I've had it apart before.

Actually, Chrysler didn't even list this in '96 as a service item for Regular use (it was every 15,000 miles for Heavy use). It's one tough ATX, but 75,000 seems a lot more reasonable than "never" for even light duty. Just be sure they know how to adjust the bands correctly and don't perform only a fluid and filter change.
