Changing timing belt
Hey folks. My brother ownes a 2000 sohc neon and needs to have the timing belt changed and probably the water pump too. I've worked on cars before but never his neon and we would like to do it our selves to avoid the $500 the dealership wants. Any help would be... uh.... a big help! Thanks.
- Can a guy do this in an after work evening?
- Any special tools needed?
- Is it as easy as put everything back together correctly and it's done or are there timing things that need to be done?
Thanks a ton.
Ben.

I have done this many times for a Neon. A step by step guild is in a factory or Chiltons manual. This will take you anywhere from 5 to 8 hours since its your first time on a Neon. One piece of advise that those guilds don't have. DO NOT use a three jaw puller on the crank pulley, go to the local tool rental shop and ask for a slide hammer. There are two styles so get the one for pulleys. It is the easiest, and most safe way to remove the crank pulley. With a jaw puller you run the risk of bending, breaking, or jamming the threads inside the crank. I learned this the hard way.
