Default 95 neon filter location??

I have a 95 neon with the single overhead cam..I bought a fuel filter from advance auto parts which consist of a lil filter but several big hoses with the plastic quick connects on it..I have looked everywhere on the car & havent found a filter at all much less one this size..could it be in the tank the way it looks or is it the wrong filter & my filter on the bottom of the fuel pump...The bottom of my tank has a place that looks like where the fuel pump would come out of...my car will run fine but then for no reason loose all power like the fuel is shut off..then finally pick back up & go on..doesnt this sound like a fuel filter or maybe a pump?
Thanks,Brian
Sorry for so long..just trying to give a good discription

The '95s had an external filter. It should be attached to the frame on the passenger side of the tank. I think there may be a skid or splash plate that you'll have to remove to get to it.

There's a test port on the fuel rail you can use to check the pressure to the injectors if you can get hold of a fuel pressure guage.

definitely under that skid plate. Three metal tapping screws hold it. Two 8mm heads and one 10 mm head if I remember right--but the oddball screw might have been a replacement at some point. That plate has to come all the way off to get the filter out of there.

I'm sure you have the right filter--your description matches the ugly monster of a filter.

As far as pumps go, you may be on to something. Mine was not that pronounced. However, I was noticing performance issues and when I replaced it of course top end was better--getting all the flow it needed--and my mileage went up about 2 MPG.
