Default My idea for my new CAI

Ok.. heres my plan.. just hear it out

I might post this to hotneons.. not sure.

Anyways.. what I want to do.. is modify my current tube.. with a friends help..and rotate the intake tube to where instead of being behind the engine.. its right in front of the engine. I meant to get pics to help show what I mean but I forgot. There is a huge empty space in front of my engine that would be perfect for an air filter. There is only one real issue.. the raidiator hose is in the way.. What I was gonna do was get another heater hose that is longer and run it over the air intake tube. Make sense at all?

I know this may seem like a lot of work.. but I dont wanna throw down 200 dollars for the name ICEMAN on my CAI. Plus I feel more satisfaction out of figuring things on my own and doing them my way first.. down the road I might get an ICEMAN.

But yes... does this sound plausible at all to you all? I was looking at it with a friend who said he could do it and all I could think was.. Gotta run it by other neon owners.. (and make sure it got Marcs blessing LOL)

If I cant modify the air intake tube I was just going to go ahead and go to Lowes and make my intake tube lol.

One other thing.. should I even bother with a TB spacer? Or just get a brand new TB? He was tryin to convince me to go TB spacer and how it would be cheaper. Dont get me wrong.. he is my friend and is honestly tryin to help me.

Yeh.. I got my thoughts out and hardly doubt anyone read all that but lemme hear ur thoughts

Here is my comment on the TB spacer for what it is worth. I had a Silverado 5.3 ltr and got the TB spacer for it. I did NOT feel any difference, and after I put it on, there was an annoying whistling. So in my experience it was a waste of money.

I am fairly new to all of this, so if I am in the wrong place please gently nudge me in the right direction.

what is the throttle body and what will it do for me? IF I get a CAI will I need to replace what I have now?

I actually like the whistling.. i figured I would get that sound if I got a bigger TB anyway.

I like the whistling sound as well. It means my car is happy. As for the throttle body spacer, I haven't heard much about them. If it was me I would just get a new throttle body. As for your idea with the cold air, it sounds pretty good. I have a big hole where my air box was as well, once I find the right piping for it I'm going to move my filter down to a cooler spot. A picture of what you're talking about would help out though.

Throttle body looks like this:

This is a 4.0 Liter Jeep 60mm TB bored to 62mm. It's got an ATX Neon shaft and linkage on it and it'll be going on my Neon when I put the turbo on.

You can find your TB on the driver's side of the engine toward the front of the car. It's got an intake on it. Remove the intake to view your TB.

my mission.... to take some pics and show what i mean and what I plan to do.

If I get a bigger TB ill still get that whistling sound right? I like to think how cool it would be to have a turbo when it makes that sound.. pretty much sounds the same right?

You'll get that whistling sound fromt eh larger TB because it doens't match the opening in the intake manifold. So yes, you will still get a slight whistle.

And a turbo whine is a much more distinct whistle as compared to a whistle from a TB not matching the opening of the IM. The Turbo whine is much nicer. And if you are thinking of th "psshhhhtt" sound you hear from a turbo it all depends on what type of BOV you get.

If you did get a bigger TB the whistle should still be there, plus it should add a deeper sound to your engine. The turbo sound is a little bit different than the whistle your car is making. At least my whistle is. My friend has a WRX and you can hear the turbo on the car spoolin up if you're in the car, or if you're driving in the car right behind it. The only way I can describe it really is my car whistles kind of like a person, whereas the turbo whistle has more of a turbine sound to it. If that made any sense I don't know. But I tried.

I love the "pssssssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhht!" noise! That would put a grin on my face every time i hear it if I had a turbo.[:@] I've decided to stay all motor though...so no "pshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhht" for me.
