Indeed, for my '96. No funds for the new covers at this point, but I'll put 'em on my wish list.

I'm going to run the Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90... any thoughts on the Amsoil Slip-Lock additive vs Mopar Trac-loc?

On a semi-related topic, does anyone know of a FAQ/how-to thread for manual trans fluid change? I can't find one for the life of me.

And what about transfer case fluid?

Questions, questions...

for that 96. . you have a NV4500HD right. . .

all you need to do is to do is remove one of the bottom bolts on the PTO cover, let the oil drain, put that bolt back in, then remove the oil fill and fill till the oil comes out.

you will need 8.5 pint of your favorate 75-90 GL-5 synthetic

Thanks Drew... I really don't know exactly what tranny I've got, but I'll look tomorrow. Sounds fairly straightforward. Any gasket or filter considerations? (Yes, I'm a noob when it comes to these big trucks!)

I see a bulk purchase of AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 in my very near future... I'd be safe running it in both the differential and tranny, right? Their specs say it meets both GL-4 and GL-5 requirements.

Any advice on the transfer case? I've only had this thing for ~8k miles; got it from my father-in-law who bought it new. He took pretty good care of it, but I'd like to swap everything out with AMSOIL, plus then I'll be able to get on my own fluid change schedule.

I actually did both diff's yesterday along with the transfer case, with the transfer case open the bottom drain plug (torx bit) and let it flow, replace and open the top and fill till it overflows with ATF+4. 2 things, when you drain it you need a big pan because there is a cross member right underneath the plug and it splashes everywhere and gets all over the cross member, and 2nd, filling is a real pain. I used one of those funnels with a flexible tube where you can fill the funnel and twist it to drain into the tube. You have to fill the funnel and keep angling it to drain properly without spilling since there is not much room to the underside of the truck and the drain/fill plugs are on the backside of the transfer case. When I was finished my driveway looked like the cat peed all over it because there was oil dri everywhere to soak up the mess. Not a hard job though, took about 2.5 hoursfor all. Good luck!!

OK, which brings up yet another question... exactly what years constitute 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen, etc?

I'm not sure what year begins the 2nd gen, but you have a 2nd gen, 3rd gen starts in '03
