Default Well which one should I buy? Drew?

Hey guys,

Well I am on the verge of selling my 06' QC 1500 Bighorn and getting a nice 07' 2500 QC CTD Big Horn. Well I guess I will go with the 5.9L so I dont have to worry about all that new smog bullfish and that fancy screen that needs replacing.... My question is for the tranny and gearing. I am thinking a 6-spd manual with 3.73 gearing will get me the best mileage with drews brew? I don't know what those numbers mean so someone please help me out... Is 4.10 worse than the 3.73??? I want to purchase exactly what I want and then just driver her...

BTW: I drive a Cat C-12 everyday...

Thanks for the help!

Theres very little difference in gear ratios that close, you might see 200 rpm difference in the 4.10:1. The higher the ratio, the lower the gear. The lower the gear, the sooner the rpm will come up and the faster the truck will accelerate. The higher the gear, the better top end you will have and usualy, the better gas mileage because you will be at lower rpm at cruise speeds. I wish Dodge would come out with a 2 speed rear end, best of both worlds!

You will be getting horrible gas mileage with either, but you will definitely get better fuel mileage with the 3.73's.......................Sorry I had to do it!

Ahh I see, thanks Horseapples. IT's basically like my dirt bike.. Smaller rear sprocket, the higher top speed / longer gears.....

So I will be getting a manual 6-speed on 3.73 then.. yay! It looks to me the"best" auto transmission would be the new six speed, but it won't be slapped to the 5.9L that I want. [:'(] Not unless someone knows a little something about the 4-speed auto that would help or that I can order to help on the mpg?

If your driving highway speeds alot (65 + mph) you will get better mileag from the auto. The 6 speed has a not so tall 6th gear. But if you drive slower than 65 the 6 speed gets great mileage and it tows like nobody's business. BTW, I don't think you can get 4.10:1with the 6 speed. Happy hunting.

heres the thing. . .before you get too excited with that 6spd, just to hit 70mph you'll be turning around oh. . .2300rpm. if may feel like your have 4.10's however the gearing of the G56 is high. for the best mileage I do have to say the auto with 3.73's will get you the best.

Sweet , thanks guys.. I see after reading the MPG sticky that most automatics get good mpg. I guess the 4 speed is not that bad.. well until we can slap another gear in there or something... Well looks like my new buy will be prolonged.. 2006 QC, Big Horn, SWB, 4.7l flex fuel1500 anyone??????
