Well .... I'm running a Radio Shack radio and a Lil Wilson mag mount antenna on the roof.

I got the Radio Shack radio because it was a last minute thought before a trip down to Florida. I also liked that it lit up red, and it was PERFECTLY sized for where i wanted to mount it. It also has channl up and down buttons on the mic. It seems to work OK I guess, I dunno.

The antenna like I said is a LIL Wilson mag mount. I popped it up on the roof and ran the wire acroos the roof into the drivers side passenger door since I never really open that door. I had just enought wire to tuck it all in nice and neat up to the raido. I never did a SWR on it for two reasons. 1, I don't have a SWR meter and 2, I don't know how to do a SWR test !! Hopefully someday I'll run into someone who has one and can do it for me.

Do any of you guy's "tune up" radios?
Most radios are designed for the max legal output. Granted someone can go inside and crank some more power out of them but then they start clipping and the sound quality goes into the porcelin throne.

Gotcha !!

I just remember back in the day ( 80's )giving my radio to some guy who knew a guy ( ect ) andthat guy"tuned" the radios for us. I don't know what it meant or what he did butI swearI could pick up conversaions and have conversations from miles away whereas before I couldn't.

I don't remember what kind of radio it was that I had, but I'm sure I bought it at Pep Boy's, and I had a Firestick mounted to my rear bumper. I think it was about 4 or 5 feet tall and you slid some plastic sleeve down the antenna to tune it ( which someone did for me ... LOL )

There are alot of socalled radio techs out there 99% of them will do more harm than good when they try to tune a radio.
If you want more power use a linier amp. Get one that has high and low settings and run it on the low side.
Another misteak that is made too offten is people buy a power mike and crank up the gain so high that it destortes your voice and makes hard for anyone to understand you.

I am in the market for a CB radio, the last time I used one the antenna was 10 feet high. I hope that the technology has improved in 20 years. Anyone have a good suggestion?
I'm running a Cobra 29 STNW, using a Wilson 1000 Ant. mounted in the center of the top of the cab. Works great, but the Cobra 29 is a bit large, I have the Cobra 29 mounted on the ext of the cup holder. (I never used it because it required reaching to far to maintain good control of the wheel when turning etc.).

I've had several different radios in the not too distant past. I have had great luck (transmitting and receiving) with the Wilson 'Lil Wil antenna. Magnetic mount and (I think) around 3-4 feet tall.

You don't really need all that power from a linear. You can talk skip half way around the world with somebody in Austraila or wherever on a radio pushing only 3 or 4 watts if everything is tuned properly.

On radios I like the Cobra 29 Classic LTD. Gets the job done and rekatively cheap. I just bought a brand new limited edition chrome one for my truck. Can;t wait to get it all tuned up and put in.

Vol/Sql - squelch cuts out background ambient noise
Dynamike/Mic Gain - adjusts mike sensitivity
RF Gain - for optimizing reception
Delta Tune - helps tune incoming signals and tune out bleed over from other channels
T/back-SWR/Cal - talk back adjusts the modulation and SWR "calibrate"
