Default How dangerous is it to run over full on oil?

I just bought a used truck and the oil change was just done by MR LUBE. I checked the oil on dipstick on pretty level ground with engine off and it was about 1/2 inch over full. should i drain this or be worried? or just leave it?

Get it back to level, over filling might cause the seals to start leaking.

Do you know if truck has levelling kit on it? If it has a levelling kit that would explain why oil level is high on dipstick. Should take 12 qts or 11.4 liters.

does a leveling kit make it completely level. because our truck is pretty level. Most dodges that are new do seem to be lower in front end.is this true for 2004?

11 quarts in the crank case, 1 in the filter. if you get too full the crank can spash the oil to the point of it foaming. . .NOT GOOD, most of the time it will just start seeping out of the seals

If the guy who changed the oil didn't know when to stop putting it in, then I'd also be willing to bet that the guy also didn't know what oil to use. Personally, if it were MY truck, I'd re-do the entire oil change incluing the filter again myself. At least then I'd KNOW that I had the right oil in there.

You know what's funny ... I've always just used 3 gallons ( including the filter ) and it's always been a little over. This time as I added the oil I stopped short of dumping the whole 3rd gallon in andwhen the stick read right I still had a little less than about a quart left over. Is that normal?

mine usually takes 11.25 qts to get right to the line. The oil should be in the range, over the range and you'll start to have problems. Under the range and you'll have problems too.
