I just ran a trip to Las Vegas in my new 5.9 and I pulled just over 22mpg for the entire trip (hand calculated) it was roughly a 600 mile trip. My truck is brand spank'n new and 100% stock at this point. I'd say my avg speed was about 75mph. I am coming from a 1500 Quad Cab HEMI so I am friggen VERY excited about the mileage out of my 5.9 DC.

I always chuckle at how mpg threads seem to end up a steady stream of "my truck gets 20+ mpg and I drive 80mph all day long into the wind!" Now that's not a slam or anything just a humorous observation on my part. I've even seen some 6.7 mpg threads turn into that My thoughts on 5.9 mpg:

If you CAN get 20+ mpg we all hate and envy you.

If you can get 19mpg consider yourself very lucky.

If you get 18 that's damn good dont be complaining.

17 is about average I wouldnt cry it's still better than gasser v8s.

16 is not unusual at all.

15 seems to be getting down there kinda low.

If youre getting 14 well you can always cry on Mayfair's shoulder and maybe he can cry on yours too

My thoughts on 6.7 mpg. Only the observation that it's gonna just be plain lousy for a few years until they can figure a way to engineeer them to be more efficient.

Last tank on my new 6.7 with auto and 3.73 rear was hand calculated at 14.0 mpg. That was also with 3 runs at the 1/4 mile track. the rest of driving was mixed intown/highway.Truck also only has 780 miles. Lie-0-Meter said 15.8...
