The flex plate is prone to breaking and the converters are week, there alot more to concider than just replacing the valve body. [8D]

I guess the cool thing is if you need to upgrade your tranny later you can reuse the flex plate and TC.

Make sure if you get your tranny rebuilt that they use a billet converter instead of the cheaper OEM style ones. Billet's can take a lot more torque andcan stand more abuse. A friend of mine had his rebuilt about a year ago (bone stock '01) and just had to send it in again because they used a cheap converter and charge him for a "heavy duty" part which decided to let loose on his way to work.

not a word more needs to be said...those are about the toughest transmissions out there. And thanks to Diesel Power magazine I can feel special because I know why they're painted purple. The owner's wife picked the color when the company started because it was her favorite color and no one else was using it in the industry for parts. Don't ask me whyI remember that.

Sharx, Ok, I'm somewhat new here and to diesel equipment, but from what I've learnedis that if you power up these drive trains, the transmissons are likely the first to suffer. A general concensus was that ATS was in the top three companies in that arena. Like the ole saying.......make sure ya got good brakes before ya make it go fast. That's why addressed that important issue first, now that it's out of the way, I can relax and have some fun. About the one bad I can think of is to maintaine their 3 year, 150,000 mile warrenty, one must change the fluid every 15,000 miles and have it documented and mailed to them. I've read here by another ATS owner, that after 15,000 miles, the fluid does suffer a bit in these transmissons, and does need to be changed. For that reason, I've been using Amsoil ATF synthetic. Silverline, Thanks for that bit a trivia, didn't know why the color either. I thought that it was some gimmick.Guess I'm glad the Mrs. didn't like hot pink or something like that!

Sharx, That's OK buddy, no greif taken ........( Damn, am I glad that purple monstasidy is hidden under the truck). I've only have around 3,000 miles on it and it performs like the day it was installed. Only time will tell, and I'm sure there are others here that has had this transmisson in their trucks longer than me. It is really a positive shifting transmisson. I find it very efficent and strong. Just putting the truck in gear, no pressure on the accelerator, she'll roll out around 7 mph. Nothing in this world is truely bullet proof, but I feel I have the odds on my side in regards to the transmisson. The cost, yes, it's up there, but if you look at the big picture, it's not a major issue. Just look at the cost of a standard, plain jane re-build, likely around $2,500.00 to $3,000.00 So given that, this isn't a ball buster, a little irratating, but that's behind me now.
