How much black smoke are you throwing out exhaust?
might be dumb question but I have a 2004 dodge ram 2500 4X4 diesel. Its the 325 hp engine. I know some basics of diesel and know that black smoke is good because it is burnt fuel. My dodge that i bought used seems to blow lots out exhaust especially when passing. but even in town if I hammer on throttle a little it blows out black smoke. (enough to make soot on back 1/4 fender and bumper)Is this normal and could it maybe chipped up without me knowing. will the chip make more black smoke or less? also i drove ford and chevys and their diesels dont blow much smoke if any.and its totally fuel related because my oil level doesnt even drop a bit between oil changes. My ? is how much does your 5.9 cummins smoke?.
black smoke is not burnt fuel it's unburnt fuel. and it's not nessacarily good. smoke usually means high egt's which can be harmful to the engine if you arn't careful.
black smoke is actualy unburnt fuel.
these trucks will smoke a bit stock. . .it is just the nature of the beast. will a chip make it smoke more. . .enough to shut down intersection

probably because you have a good air intake system on there it's getting enough air to burn off a lot of the fuel therefore no smoke. but that lso means ur egt's are lower which is a very good thing.
it smokes a decent amount. so with a chip it will smoke more? and if so then chips arent good are they. why would you wanna add a $600 chip so that you can send out more UNBURNT fuel?
