The manufacturer of the filter system will indicate the cleaning interval.6K seems pretty often.

Depending on the kind of driving you do 6k is very frequent (if off-roading or in dusty area that is a different story), I have had my K&N on my truck 20k and have cleaned it twice (once before a long trip and a couple days ago in preperation for a long trip). Both times it didn't really need it, but they can get very dirty on longer trips with the stock air grill.
An aside:
For all those of you who are having issues with bugs and such getting into theA/C condenserand beating up fins, or have a CAI that is getting bugs and stuff in it from going though your grill: I went to the hardware store and bought a roll of screen material (I got aluminum screen for color and for toughness over the cheap stuff) and sandwiched it in between the grill and the grill support. Not one bug on the air filter or inA/C condenserfins(in that area, down low is a different story), just have to clean the screen every oncein a while.

I'll likely never runa wet filteragain on a diesel but read my dissertation on the K&N vs BHAF thread. I'm not stating that the use of the K&N filter had anything to do with the engine failure but am revealing what Ilearned about the filter's performancewhen I tore the engine down. All that needs to be added here is that theK&N filterhadbeen in use less than 10,000 miles and hadbeen cleanedand reoiled once according to the instructions even though the filter minder didn't show a significant reading.

I drive up to maine and back 2 times in the summer. and my camp in maine is down a 15 mile dirt road around a lake..everytime i change it, it seems to be pretty dirty...i have never really looked at what they suggest on when and how many miles to clean it. i just go by how dirty compared to clean....ill try 10K and save me some money in oils and time in changing..

thanks for the help!
