Default fuel pressure gauge

hello all, in the autometer thread i mentioned i had just installed an a pillar triple gauge set, pyro, boost and tranny temp. i now feel that only one more gauge will round out my needs, a fuel pressure gauge. i have seen another version that is just an led that comes on when the pressure is low, is this enough, also why is there the need to keep track of the fuel pressure, i have read there is an inherent problem that rears it's ugly head, but what causes this and could happen if left unchecked, i have an '07 5.9ctd, with 12,000 k's,thanks for any info.

Your fuel pressure is important because you don't want to strave the CP3 ( fuel pump ) The pump alone is around 5K. It's very fine tuned and if ran dry could end up with heat damage ( the fuel helps keep it cool ), bad o-rings..etc. Also, you'll be running the rail dry which in turn is running the injectors dry... all very bad things to happen.

It's really not something to worry about though if you aren't heavily modded. If you start running perfomance boxes, they're going to call for more fuel which is where you'll start loosing fuel and rail pressure. If you can keep you foot out of WOT you should be ok stock. Even then, you can get the pressure down to almost zero.

The low pressure light probably would be fine but, as I said... if you're modded, you're gonna want a good fuel supply. Maybe some of the FASS guys here can tell you a little about how they got around low fuel pressure. This is my recommendation .... http://www.glacierdieselpower.com/de...dept_id=09-003

I'm really back and forth on the LED light thing.

I guess it's OK if you had nothing else, however, when the light comes on, it's time to shut er down before all hell breaks loose. With a gauge you can monitor a slow and steady drop and you'll have more of a warning than you would once the light comes on. With a gauge, you can tackle the problem BEFORE it comes up, whereas once the light glows, the problem has arrived.

So, I have come to understand that the VP44 Distributer pump dislikes loss of fuel pressure...

The question: Is it a "if" the lift pump dies or "when"
I'm going to get a pillar triple gauge set with a fuel press gauge, but my economy is somewhat stressed so I will have to wait.
My truck has 260 000km on it so I guess that I can't wait for too long.[:@]

And another question: what is normal fuel pressure on -02 5,9 CTD
Thanx
