truck dies when low fuel
My truck dies when the fuel gauge gets right below a 1/4 tank, driving it on the highway I can tell its not running right then the idle starts moving alot then it dies. I can put like 2 gallons of fuel it it and it rns just fine after starting it with starter fulid. After it starts, it shorts like white smoke out the tail pipe. Other then that, it runs just fine. I'm thinking the is a bunch of junk at the bottom on the tank. I don't know where it may of come from so quick. If there is something in the tank, is dropping it the only way to drain it? By the way I have a 2001 24 valve
this wont be of any help to you but i drive a ford l8000 dump truck at work and its got a cummins in it. i leave it running when i fuel it up and lately when the fuel is spraying in the tank the truck starts to idle funny for a minute (kinda speeds up then goes real low) and the truck stalls. when i go to start it, it wont start at all, it just turns..... i have to wait 3-5 minutes for it to start and i gotta start it at full throttle to keep it running. sounds like the same problom kinda and i was assuming it was a dirty tank like you but havent done anything to look into it because its only when i fuel[:-].
I have to give mine like full throttle to kep it running after it starts, the idle smooths out and it shoots white smoke out and the exhaust is really strong
sounds like your fuel level indicator (float) is a bit out a wack..if it runs out just under a 1/4 tank, then its already at E when youre hittin 1/4.
change the fuel filter pronto!

I filled my truck up when it read just above a 1/4 tank and it took bout 26 gallons, I'm thinking the gauge or float is messed up

Your headed for VP44 problems real quick. I wouldn't run B100 in that truck unless you have upgraded your lift pump. If you have been running B100 you could have trash in the lines, fuel filter, tank, etc.
First, I'd check your fuel pressure at the injector pump. White smoke is a good indication of fuel starvation and that is what kills your VP44 which is a $1400-$1600 job if you do it your self.
It also sounds like your sending unit is bad. The float in the tank is more than likely messed up. You will have to drop the tank to change it, while you got the tank off, clean out any junk in the bottom.
You can check the gauge itself by holding down the odometer button on the dash and turning the truck on (don't start it), then let go. The dash will go through a diagnostic and your gauges will go from 0 to full and back. If your fuel gauge goes from 0 to full and back, then I'd say it is a pretty good indication that you have a float problem.
Also if you drop the tank you can check for any shorts or cuts in the wire that goes to the sending unit. You won't be able to check it while the tank is on there because the wire goes behind the tank and against the frame rail.

I know several people you make and run B100 in there trucks, I have run it in truck in bout 2 months, it only shots out white smoke when I try to start it after if dies.
