Default Fuel mileage

Just brought a 2004 2500 4x4 with the ho motor--gets 18 miles on the highway but pulling a 3000lbs boat it gets 12 miles a gallon..Is this about right or can i do something to better the mileage pulling?? Thanks

I forgot to say it has 3.73 gears and a auto tranny.

That does sound a little off. I would guess that you have it in tow/haul mode. I get 12.8 - 13.2 pulling a 10,200# camper at 70 mph.

I was in florida so i didnt have it in the haul mode. But did as soon as i hit the mountains.
