Default 2001 transmission

i just purchased a 2001 2500 2wd, with automatic transmission. it has 146000 miles and runs well. problem is when i put into drive the transmission engages very hard. doesnt do it in reverse and gets through all the gears without any slipage. truck has a power puck, could this have increased idle speed? what should idle speed be? any help would be appreciated as i am new to diesels, just traded off my hemi. thanks.

That might be a smidge high for the idle.. I'm guessing you meant 800 which is where mine idles at. So I don't think that would be the issue. Only other thought is when was the last time the tranny fluid was changed.

Since you don't know, the first thing I would do is go through and change all the fluid (oil, differential, tranny) and change the filters. Not sure if that would fix it, but at least you know you have fresh fluids in there.

Mine idles fine, but the line pressure for the tranny is pretty high. The guy at the tranny shop told me it was 100psi. Putting it into drive/reverse it engages pretty hard, but shifting is normal. He said it could tear some stuff up and I should look at lowering it. I bought mine with a bully dog something or another in it and haven't tried taking it out to see if it would help.
