Default Mileage Computer

I have heard from many of you that your mileage computer on the overhead console is a little optimistic, but mine is crazy. I recently drove 350 highway miles. At the end of the trip the computer said that I got 21 mpg. I hand calculated 15.4 mpg. Around town it usually stays around 18 mpg. Hand calculated I get about 14 mpg in town. Is there anything I can do or should I just never look at it again? It always gets my hopes up.

Stick a screwdriver in it and you wont have to worry about it lying anymore It will just look bad. Anyway my 04 seems to do better around town on fuel than it does on the hwy. I guess the 4:10 gear winds er up tight at 80mph.

I think there might be a flash available for your year truck to make the overhead closer to realistic. Mine has been off anywhere from .8 mpg to 5 mpg. [:'(]Have you reset it yet? You might try resetting it to see if it gets any better.

On mine if Ireset it just before towing my camper it will go way down while towing. It will then take longer to climb back up and usually be closer to reality for the tank.

I have found the exact opposite. I use to reset it all the time, and the milage would read really high. 25mph on the freeway, and 20 around town. It made me feel real good to see those high numbers. But hand calculation was way off. So I desided not to touch the reset button for awhile and see what happened. The milage on the overhead started coming down. And now that I haven't hit the reset button for over 2000 miles, the overhead readsa couple of tenths off, plus or minus my hand caculations. So I would say mine is reading pretty accurately to my hand caculations.
